In the INNERnet Connection Project, we explored aspects of modern labor and industrial era history, learning space design, and progressive work spaces, with a focus on humans’ relationship to technology. Using our own campus as our laboratory, students created data collection tools about stress, anxiety, and our learning spaces. We then developed beta version experiences to address student and staff needs related to coping in a high-stress, high-”noise” society by creating opportunities to de-stress and reconnect. Based in beta-users’ feedback, the scale models and concept boards and statements are proposals for dream installations at High Tech High. We will be sharing our findings with school and student leaders in hopes to integrate solutions that holistically address our community’s learning and wellness needs.
My group and I chose to design a yoga studio because we found that a lot of people at High Tech High like to de-stress by exercising. Our group experimented with this idea and actually hosted a yoga class after school for a few days. We asked the people who came to this yoga class how stressed they were before doing yoga and how stressed they were once they finished. Everyone we asked said their stress level went down after doing the exercise with us which was really interesting. After experimenting, we actually got to design our own yoga studio and create a model of it where everything was to scale. I had to calculate the size of the building, the windows, the yoga mats, the table, and the curtains and once I was finished, I cut out everything and put it together. To the right are pictures of my complete scale model and calculations. |

CONCEPT BOARD & CONCEPT STATEMENT
When you feel stressed out and are in need of relaxation, students and staff will have the opportunity to take a break to clear their minds at the “Unwind Your Mind” yoga studio. This will be a remodel, transforming a classroom into a yoga studio. This room would feel like a separate space from everyone else, with curtains draped from the ceiling to cover the windows making it a private place for people to feel comfortable while exercising. The room’s lighting will be dim so people can feel calm and relaxed with lantern-type lights spread across the ceiling. The yoga studio will also have wood flooring where yoga mats will be laid down for anyone to use. The colors of the room are very light and neutral to set a calm mood that goes along with the dim lighting so it’s not too bright for people to really be in the yoga zone and feel stress-free. |
